Jeremy,
I've checked my 1861 census data base and found that the
two Poor Law Unions with the largest numbers of chemical
workers were Gateshead and Prescot (both with around 1,100
workers).
After these came Manchester, South Shields, West Brom and
Bolton with between 200 and 300 workers each.
