Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
+Relocating Britishness+ 22-24 June 2000 - An international,
interdisciplinary conference, concerning current tensions in the
representation of Britishness.
University of Central Lancashire, Preston
A conference to explore English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh nationalism
as well as the concept of a single British nation; to discuss regional,
ethnic and class cultures and their representations; the division
between North and South and the myth of Middle England; to assess the
role of the media in representing, confirming and changing national and
regional identities; to analyse the role of history, heritage, religion,
ethnicity and gender in defining and shaping particular versions of
Britishness and to examine international and expatriate perspectives on
a British nation.
Papers are welcome from the widest possible range of perspectives, such
as: art, landscape and other cultural expressions of nationalism;
monarchy and national identity; national identity and politics; nation
and state; the concept of post-national society.
