UKOLN, at the University of Bath, currently has the following four
vacancies:

Research Officer/Agora Communications Co-ordinator
Information Officer
Software Developer
RDNC Systems Developer

UKOLN is a national focus of expertise in network information management. We
provide policy, research and awareness services in the areas of digital
libraries, web technologies and knowledge management. Working closely with
other national organisations and with international collaborators we aim to
inform practice and influence policy within the information community. Our
work is informed by involvement in a range of projects and initiatives.

UKOLN invites applications for the following posts:

Research Officer/Agora Communications Co-ordinator

As Communications Co-ordinator you will primarily take responsibility for
UKOLN's contribution to the Agora project. The post is offered initially for
a minimum of 6 months, to provide maternity leave cover. Hours are
negotiable, but at least 3 days per week are required. Depending on your
interests, there are opportunities to work in other areas of UKOLN activity.
There is some flexibility in location.

Agora is one of the Electronic Library Programme's hybrid library projects
which aims to provide integrated access to traditional print-based library
resources and network information services. Agora will enable libraries to
provide a single consistent user interface to a variety of information
services by means of developing a standards based broker or gateway. UKOLN
is responsible for communication within the project and dissemination of
results. Both are key integral components of the project. The project offers
experience of working with the UK academic library community as well as
systems and service providers, to develop new network information systems
and services. You will work closely with relevant UKOLN colleagues on
distributed library systems, metadata, and web-based environments. You will
also have a high level of interaction with Agora project members, eLib and
the wider UK and overseas communities.

Informal enquiries should be made to Lorcan Dempsey. Phone (01225) 826254 or
email [log in to unmask]

Starting salary will be in the range of 16,286 - 24,479 per annum. Ref No
99/290.

Information Officer

As Information Officer you will be a member of UKOLN's Information Services
Group providing support for a range of UKOLN's activities, including
production of the web magazines Ariadne (a leading web-based resource for
the UK Library and Information communities) and Exploit Interactive (a
European web magazine for the Library community). In addition, you will help
to develop a new magazine aimed at the European museums and archives
communities and also assist in the maintenance of UKOLN's web service and
providing support for UKOLN projects.

You should have an understanding of emerging trends in networked information
and library services and will work well with a wide range of contacts.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, out-going, self-motivated individual for
this post. Experience of editing newsletters or magazines, including
writing, commissioning and editing articles, design and achieving deadlines
is desirable. You should have experience of using HTML tools to produce high
quality web resources and will want to develop skills in network-based
information handling, organisation, quality control and publicity.

Starting salary will be in the range of 16,286 - 24,479 per annum depending
on qualifications and experience. The contract will be for a two year
period.

Informal enquiries should be made to Brian Kelly (phone 01225 323943 or
email [log in to unmask]) or to Lorcan Dempsey (phone 01225 826580 or email
[log in to unmask]). Ref No 99/291.

Software Developer

As part of a multi-disciplinary team of six software developers and
information specialists you will be working on a range of externally funded
projects. Ability to work within a team and enthusiasm for communicating
results are essential. You will have programming and software design skills
and the ability to work within a UNIX (Solaris) environment using either
Perl, C, C++ or Java programming languages.

You will have the opportunity to work with new and emerging technologies in
information management and web-based systems. Projects underway include
development of directory services, metadata registries, and generic
information broker architectures. Contact with project partners and
practitioners will form an important part of the job. Depending on your
interests and experience there will be potential for involvement in project
management.

You will have the chance to influence our research agenda, and will be
involved in proposals for future funding which, if successful, may lead to
renewal of your contract.

Informal enquiries should be made to Rachel Heery. Phone (01225) 826724 or
email [log in to unmask]

Starting salary will be in the range of 16,286 - 24,479 per annum depending
on qualifications and experience. The contract will be for a two year
period. Ref No 99/292.

RDNC Systems Developer

The Resource Discovery Network (RDN) aims to provide effective access to
high quality Internet resources. It will develop to provide rich entry
points to a full range of Internet, bibliographic, documentary and data
resources, focusing on the needs of the UK learning and research communities
and be delivered by a cooperative network of interconnected subject
gateways.

The RDN is funded by the JISC and coordinated by UKOLN and the Arts and
Humanities Data Service.

The Resource Discovery Network Centre (RDNC) is looking to recruit an
enthusiastic Systems Developer to contribute to the development and
management of web-based 'portal' services, enabling centralised access to
the RDN. Experience of providing dynamic information on the web including
knowledge of HTML, Javascript, CGI and Perl is essential. Some familiarity
with systems administration, package installation and service provision in a
UNIX environment will be a distinct advantage. At UKOLN, you will work
closely with other members of the RDN, including staff based at UKOLN and at
the subject gateway sites. You will also be able to draw on the existing
software development and information management experience available in
UKOLN's research and information services teams.
