Dear Italian-studies list
I'm sitting pondering Dante's use of the story of Pyramus and Thisbe in
Purgatorio. On looking up Elsa, the river, in the Enciclopedia Dantesca, I
read: "Le sue acque sono particolarmente dure: da cio' la proprieta', nota
fin dall'antichita' (Ovidio, Plinio) Š di formare incrostazioni sui corpi
che vi si immergono." The author of the article, Adolfo Cecilia, does not
give a precise reference to his classical sources, and a quick look through
the indices of my Loeb Ovid do not give any references to "Elsa".
I now live in Islamabad, Pakistan, and I do not have access to any more
sophisticated reference books, so if any of the erudite members of the list
know their Ovid better than I do, could they please help me with a
reference.
Thank you,
Tor Torhaug
