Turlough,
larger companies frequently implemented ISO 14001 step by step (or business unit
by business unit). And indeed, as you suggest, rolling mills are often among the
first operations of a steel producer to be certified.
To give a few examples:
The Anglo-Swedish stainless steel producer Avesta Sheffield achieved first
certification in the UK for its Panteg rolling mill in Wales, intending to use
the implementation of ISO 14001 in this operation as a model for the
certification of other operations in the UK.
The Czech steel maker Nova Hut in Ostrava achieved certification for the rolling
mill in 1997 and for the power plant in 1998. Nova Hut is planning to achieve
certification for the tube and engineering plant in 1999, the steel plant in
2000, the coking plant in 2001.
British Steel achieved ISO certification first for its track products plant in
Workington and the Redcar coke ovens in Teesside.
Similarly Allied Steel and Wire (ASW) achieved certification first for its nail
factory in Cardiff and intends to use this process as a model to achieve it goal
for certification of its other Cardiff based operations (e.g. EAF steel making).
I hope these comments are useful
Steffen
