The Politics of Interdependence
a conference at the interface of psychoanalysis and politics
jointly sponsored by the Tavistock Clinic and The Centre for the Study of
Society and Politics at Kingston University
Tavistock Clinic. London

The conference asks what are the social and political conditions which
promote interdependence, as opposed to indifference. Political, clinical and
philosophical perspectives are brought together in this unique event.

"Interdependence: the inescapability of painful loss". Margaret Rustin,

Trust, author of many articles on child psychotherapy, co-author of
Narratives of Love and loss: Studies in Modern Children's Fiction, Verso,
1987
"Politics and Citizenship: do they mean us?" Richard Sennett, Professor of
Sociology, New York University and London School of Economics, The Corrosion
of Character was published in 1998
with responses from David Bell, Psychoanalyst and Psychiatrist, Tavistock
Clinic (editor, Psychoanalysis and Culture, Duckworth 1999) Michael Rustin,
Professor of Sociology, University of East London (The Good Society and the
Inner World, Verso 1991); Philip Spencer, Kingston University, co-author of
"Nationalism and national identity - a critical analysis" to be published
by Macmillan in 2000.
