Hi Gill, thanks for posting on the list for me. Sorry I haven't been in touch.
Not sure how I feel right now as I left my job last Friday, and it all feels so
strange. A few days off now until I start next Monday in Redhill.
I went to the BILD Conference in London yesterday. It was excellent. I only
wish I had been able to afford all three days, as there were some brilliant
speakers on all the days. It was held at Church House, Westminster - an amazing
place - I think its where they hold the General Synod, and we felt quite grand
sitting in the big hall where all the bishops and clergy usually sit.
In the morning the first seminar was on self injurious behaviour (Prof. Travis
Thompson from John F. Kennedy Centre in America). I then went to a symposium on
Sexuality convened by Dr. Paul Cambridge, Tizard Centre, University of Kent, and
in the afternoon there was a keynote speech by Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen (University
of Cambridge) on Autism entitled "Psychological Studies of Theory of Mind". He
talked about the development of "mind-reading" (what he calls the ability of
children to develop understanding of what people are thinking) and how this
remains undeveloped or limited in children with autism. He described how the
ability to understand people is separate from understanding things, and believes
this explains how some people with severe difficulties are unable to understand
people or interpret their behaviour yet can be very talented in understanding
things, suggesting that mind-reading is separate from general intelligence. I
would have liked to go to the symposium on autism that followed, but decided
instead to go to the one on emancipatory research and undertaking research with
people with learning disabilities, as this was relevant to my second year MA
requirements!
The one thing the day did for me was to take my mind off everything else, and I
felt really fired up!!
I also met some really interesting people, including Leanne Dowse - she
recognised my name from the drl!! She also remembered you, and the problem you
had with people on the list being really stuffy! She comes from Australia
(currently living in London) and is doing a PhD here, has a friend at Leeds
working alongside Mark Priestley. Anyway, she gave me her e-mail and told me to
keep in touch.
I also got a couple of excellent contacts to do with Parenting Skills for people
with LD including the name of a lady in Truro who has been working on this.
All in all it was an excellent day, and I hope it will give me a good grounding
for starting next week.
I have stored info sent via the list on Parenting. Thanks again for putting the
message on the drl.
Geoff (hubby) thinks I should not be sad anymore about my Mum, and just get on
with life - I am really trying to, but it just feels so strange without her. I
don't feel like getting upset right now, just feel rather empty, not easy to
explain. I have another counselling session on thursday. This is with a lady
who I saw once before, so I don't have too much explaining to do, as she knows
about my previous bereavement (Helen) and some of my family details, so it has
been a bit easier.
Must go, mundane housework to do!!
