This should be a major advance for the general acceptance of the Dublin
Core. Reading over their discussion of DC elements, they have appeared to
accept almost everything verbatim, with an interesting attempt for
Creator and Contributor to achieve some sort of authority control: a
"file-as" addition, e.g.:
<dc:Creator file-as="King, Martin Luther Jr." role="aut">
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
</dc:Creator>
What does everyone think about this? I think it's far better than
nothing, and could work similarly to old book catalogs, e.g.
WILSON WOODROW 1856-1924
- Americanism. Addresses by Woodrow Wilson ... at the Convention
hall, Philadelphia, May 10, 1915; Franklin K. Lane ... New
York, January 11, 1919; Theodore Roosevelt ... New York,
October 12, 1915.
[n.p., Americanization department, Veterans of foreign wars of
the United States, 1926]
- Anniversary of Lee's birthday.
Chapel Hill : Published by the University, 1909.
- Congressional government : a study in American politics /
Woodrow Wilson ; introduction by Walter Lippman ; afterword
by Robert L. Peabody.
Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press, 1981.
and so on.
Of course, the OEB specification doesn't mention where this "file-as"
form should come from, but the implication *seems* to be that everyone
should follow some sort of authority file. (If the forms are supposed to
file together, it follows that they should be the same)
This should be good news for everyone, including librarians.
