Thanks for getting us back on track. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of the
concept of "authority" in this sense. In the olden days of librarianship, they
added notes in the catalog such as "a superior edition" or "obsolete". We don't
do this anymore, for obvious reasons.
On the other hand, in a library catalog, which selects the best, inferior items
don't exist (at least, they aren't supposed to!).

Yes, or like the items strung around a printer's office. It seems to me that
Alex's interpretation of "Publisher" deprives it of all meaning. Is it really
useful to add "GeoCities" to every other record? In this case, what good would a
search on "publisher: geocities" be?
