INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRANSNATIONAL COMMUNITIES IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC
REGION: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES
Jointly organised by
The Centre for Advanced Studies
National University of Singapore
and
Transnational Communities Programme,
Economic and Social Research Council, UK
VENUE
Seminar Rooms A, B & C, Shaw Foundation Building
National University of Singapore
DATES
7-8 August 2000
The Centre for Advanced Studies, National University of Singapore together
with the Transnational Communities Programme, Economic and Social Research
Council, UK are pleased to announce a forthcoming conference on
'Transnational Communities in the Asia-Pacific Region: Comparative
Perspectives.' The main aim of the conference is to examine the dynamics
involved in the construction of various transnational communities against
the rich and diverse socio-cultural canvas of the Asia-Pacific. In doing so,
the conference would give attention to the links between 'home' and 'away'
and the construction of self/other divides differentiating these communities
from wider societies in which they are located. Comparison across different
communities would give us a broad-based understanding of the dynamics
involved. Some of these communities include Chinese, Indian, Filipino,
Vietnamese, Indonesian and Singaporean transnational communities as well as
American and European 'expat' communities in Asia.
Themes
Specific themes for the conference include:
* Transnationalism in the Asia-Pacific as a history of 'diasporic
encounters' or 'diasporic space.' The material and cultural interrelation
and exchange between different migrants in the development of various
Asia-Pacific societies and economies. Transnationalism as a history of
multiculturalism.
* Transnational communities, citizenship and national identities.
Relation between 'nation-states' and the 'transnational' - dependent,
independent or interdependent? The role and contribution of these
communities in nation-building and enrichment of national cultures.
Ethnicity and transnationalism.
* Impact of the Asian Economic Crisis on transnational communities.
The continuities and breaks in transboundary flows caused by the crisis.
Shifts in labour migration patterns and impacts on transnational households.
* Gendered character of transnational community formation. The
feminisation of migration and the place of diaspora women in the
Asia-Pacific. Comparative dimensions across countries and location in the
work force in terms of the movement of skilled and less skilled human
resources.
* Media and transnational communications - Popular culture in the
Asia-Pacific and 'transnationalism from below' - or 'transnational cultural
exchange.'
