(note to self - keep it 'critical'!!!)
Been thinking a bit about this and while, sadly, this alone achieves
nothing it is roughly about all that I am empowered to do. Isn't it
? What can we do about the current situation in East Timor - get on
the email ? Smothing has to be done and some kind of move has to be
made but, I note, we are all fearful of the consequences of sending
in international troops - what is the alternative though ??
In the long-term we could, we the British nation that is (apologies
to others), stop supplying the Indonesian military with spare parts
for all the equipment we have sold to them - not, of course, that
they are using British planes over East Timor :-) Or guns. Or
ammunition etc...
Short-term ? Send in the clowns ? Probably - but, if we send them in
, they'll have to stay. Send them in and to hell with the
consequences - we have to stop the dying NOW !! The next question,
however, is who do *we* send in ??
Much as many of us hate the British state, the US, NATO (not the UN though)
etc., we should probably let them go for now - until we can think of a
more reasoned approach. Let's not forget that military power can be
a good thing and that simply opposing NATO for the sake of it doesn't really
achieve much (and certainly not for the people of East Timor).
