ESRC Virtual Society? Research Programme
Inclusion or Exclusion: Access to the Internet and Public Participation
Steve Carver, Sonia Liff and Sally Wyatt
Description of topic:
While the Internet and other Information Communication Technologies
(ICTs) are oft mooted as great social levellers in terms of their
ability to provide easy access to information, there are many problems
associated with their use. Access to the technology and the skills
required to use it feature prominently among these. This workshop is
focused on identifying the issues of social exclusion surrounding the
use of the Internet for access to information and the democratic
process. Issues of social exclusion are currently listed under the
ESRC's Thematic Research Priorities and a significant number of
government reports and other documents have recently called for greater
public involvement in a wide variety of contexts at local, regional and
national levels. This workshop is therefore seen as timely in helping
focus academic, public, commercial and government attention on the role
of ICTs in addressing issues of social exclusion.
Main aims of workshop:
The main aims of the workshop are as follows:
- Bring together a critical mass of interested people to discuss and
share ideas/experiences on issues of social exclusion and, in
particular, those related to ICTs;
- Identify the role of the Internet as a force for social
inclusion/exclusion;
- Discuss the potential role of the Internet with particular reference
to access to information and the democratic process;
- Exhibit demonstration case studies of Internet use for social
inclusion; and
- Stimulate further discourse and possible moves towards policy
recommendations.
