Dear Jenny, Pam, Jo and Becky,
Thanks for taking the (considerable) time to post your thoughtful comments
about respectful participation in the CGF.
I would like to second (third, fourth, fifth?) what you say. It is
important that we treat each other with respect here, and try to learn from
the various perspectives offered up on the forum. Otherwise, it seems to
me that rather than being critical and reflexive geographers, we become
reactionary geographers.
It is troubling at times to see the list taken over by one or two 'vocal'
individuals whose tone precludes from the outset any meaningful
participation by others. This is certainly not the vision for the CGF
intended by those who, as I see it, set up the forum as a space for
critical DIALOGUE among colleagues who might feel 'safe' to express
opionions (or outline considerable expertise) on issues of concern to
radical geographers.
Ultimately, if we want to maintain this space as an un-moderated list, it
is up to us to support colleagues while at the same time allowing space for
significant differences of opinion. One way of doing this is to always
attempt to maintain a respectful tone in our postings.
Thanks to Jenny and others for outlining their concerns, thereby reminding
us of the constant need to respect all members of the list.
Best wishes,
Lawrence
