Or if list members are interested in more direct action - rather than
pondering representations while people are dying in East Timor -RIGHT NOW- -
you may want to respond to the following request for help.
You may also be interested to know that the union movement in Australia have
instigated union bans on dealing with Indonesian companies - specifically
blocking all handling of freight from Garuda Airlines.
I have a list of protest rallies organised for the next few days in Sydney,
Australia. If any local list members are interested, feel free to email me
for details.

This is a very very very urgent action! WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE EAST
TIMOR PEOPLE IS OUTRAGEOUS! Please help!
Petition:
(Send the following message to the UN, leading world governments,...
Some contacts: Kofi Annan ([log in to unmask]), USA President
([log in to unmask]), Australia Ambassador at UN
([log in to unmask])
New Zealand Ambassador at UN ([log in to unmask])
Message:
"Dear Sir,
The East Timor people have recently, in a referendum supervised by the
UN, massively voted in favour of their independence from Indonesia. Since
then, pro-Indonesia armed groups of thugs have been on a rampage of killing
and destruction throughout the territory. The Indonesia Army and Police
are accomplices in these actions, as it is clear from the international
news coverage this past week. The International Community, if it does not
intervene, will also be an accomplice in this crime against humanity
that is taking place right under our eyes.
We demand an IMMEDIATE international armed intervention in order to stop the
genocide that is taking place at this very moment. No people deserves being
exterminated. Least of all the East Timorese, who have been victims of Indon
esia for twenty-four years, who have seen its population reduced by one
third through murder or exile. And who have proved their extreme courage yet
again by voting last Monday, trusting the United Nations would protected
them.
The International Community should do something NOW, and prove this trust
was not misplaced.
