I couldn't agree more - I love clinical medicne and helping trainees
develop an approach to decision-making - but spend nearly 2/3rds of my time
negotitaing on behalf of my specialty. That's why we're the only hospital
in the Republic of Ireland with 2 Consultants. My colleague has learnt
that playing "Good Cop- Bad Cop" in small group meetings is very effective
at realising resources and getting backing from In-House people. I think
that, ultimately, the Oz system will prevail here - the whole argument
about excessive hours would vanish in a puff of breeze if we had penalty
rates for overtime.
In the heel of the hunt, however, you can only be an effective clinical
trainer if you are a good clinician.
Being a good administrative head of department may mean you can gain more
for your trainees overall. You may also be able to provide them with a
guide to "resource harvesting."
