Derek - I personally believe that this is the only way to do it (and formally
provide my trainees with more office shifts per week than other Departments
in this Region - I'm all for training rather than exploiting!). By formalising
this everyone is clear as to what the SpR should be doing at any one time and
yes, all aspects of your training are important and I'm pleased that we, as
a specialty, seem to have got our act together better than other specialties.
One of my other points however is that shopfloor time, as well as being service
time, is also very important training time and I worry about this being given
second place - after all if the Consultants of the future are to join us on
the shopfloor this clinical expertise is vital if they are to be taken seriously
and teach the juniors of the future.
