I wanted to pass along a short case example for others. I recently had a 10
yo male come to my clinic for a screen. The mother complained that her son
was limping. The boy stated no real pain complaint except for a feeling of
pressure in his leg and anterior groin pain. Upon a examination of gait,
running, and manual tests the child had significant weakness in hip
abduction, hip extension, abnormal tracking pattern in the knee. His gait was
horrific despite the child saying he was not in a great deal of pain. I was
deeply worried re: the femoral head growth plate or Legg-Calf_ Perthes
disease. I strongly advised the mother to not allow the boy to play or
practice anymore soccer until cleared. The orthopedic surgeon took the XRays
and discovered a large region of fibrous dysplasia in the femur. He stated
that this is not all rare, but the size of this dysplasia was. He has since
been sent to a bone and tuomor specialist.
