Let us see if we can envisage this endless debate between physical
therapists
and chiropractors being finally resolved... and proposes that an
entirely new,
but integrated profession be set up, called, for argument's sake,
Scientific
Therapy (ST).
Perhaps the name does lack something or more to the point not truly
reflect what each and all of us does in our professions should they
combine. The idea does attract me. I remember a past patient
chastising me, and stating the need for PT Chiro, Osteo to get their
act together and only then would we begin to gain respect let alone
political and economical clout. For too long the purse strings of
health been held solely by the medical profession (at least in New
Zealand, this has been the case). As regard to the merits of
scientific endeavor, Mel has a very valid point. PT in NZ certainly
has struggled to gain funding and enough dedicated research
professionals to produce papers of worthiness. A combined effort could
potentially accelerate our professions to new heady heights of world
leaders of health research and also gain solid public support and
status.
Is this all just hot air floating away fading into the distance? A
bad dream or all a bit of a joke? I think there is enough merit in
the idea that would be worthy of further dialogue. After all, how
many of you would have dreamed that as a profession we would be
carrying on a world wide discussion such as this, when we first
entered into the profession? The advances in communications has
caused rapid change in both public and professional worlds. The
health sector is no different, change is happening. Perhaps in the
light of this change we need to reflect and rethink about where, what
and how our profession should head in the not too distant future!
