I am sure it was the salt industry which was the reason for the location
of much heavy chemical industry in the Widnes area. Afterall salt is still
the basis of some of the chemical industry in that area today.
For those who may want to read further I would recommend the book quoted
in an earlier message by David Kitching. It is "The Chemical Industry" by
WA Campbell, Longmans, 1971. Sadly Alex Campbell died a few months ago.
