Dear Claire
MANY years ago, when I taught in the beautiful depths of
Dorset, a number of sixth forms in the region got together
for a joint 'case study day'. A local businessman came in
and introduced a case study scenario (which was actually his
business) He went back over the past few years, describing
all aspects of his business: marketing, accounts and so on,
and then stopped...The task for the students was to decide
what he should do next. They (with us as teacher/observers)
went away and worked on the problem (in joint groups from
different schools/colleges) and presented their findings.
They came up with some fantastic advice, which the
businessman really appreciated. Of course, he was describing
something that had already happened and so he was able to
tell them what he ACTUALLY did (as I remember he got it all
wrong and lost a large amount of money!). The realism was
incredibly effective and the day was one of the best
business studies teaching days I have experienced.
Now, some problems: first find your venue, second, your
businessperson (and that's almost certainly going to be
difficult...), third, getting the sixth formers to work
together etc., etc.
Good luck,
David
