I always introduce the basic ideas of economics - scarcity, choice,
opportunity cost etc. by discussing the students' reasons for their
post-16 decisions. E.g why did they choose to continue their
education? Why did they coose to study Economics and not a different
subject? Why only choose three A Levels, why not four or more?
The scarce resource is clearly their time, the opportunity cost a
straight work-leisure trade off. The idea of why only three A Levels
introduces CBA and decision making at the margin.
They are then ready to tackle NHS rationing......
