Re is Business or Economics Easier: I think it's really a case of "Horses
for Courses".
Do scientists have the same discussion over whether Physics or Chemistry is
easier? Perhaps someone could tell me. I have a suspicion that since both
subjects are well established they wouldn't bother ... seeing the two as
complementary.
I sometimes wonder if when we let this old chestnut go out into the wider
media we actually do ourselves and our students a great dis-service,
shouldn't we start to view the two as complementary - meeting the needs and
aspirations of a wider range of students.
I've just had a group of 17 go through the Nuffield course. We allowed a
free choice of options 1, 2, 5 and 6. The only two students who choose the
Macro economics Option 2 did this to get the full Economics A level ... the
'High flyer' got a B (0 GCSE profile residual), the "struggler" got an A(+2
residual). Goodness only knows what conclusions can be drawn from that!
The other three who got A's all did Options 5 and 6 for straight Business
Studies (+1 and +2 subject residuals).
I'm not really sure it's so cut and dried which subject is easier. Obviously
my group was too small to be statistically relevant, perhaps others have
bigger exam groups and a clearer view of the "easiest" debate.
In my fondest fantasies I'd love to offer a double time slot course leading
to A level Economics, A Level Business Studies and A level Accounts ....
that would be "value for money" for the students and more useful than a GNVQ
from the same time allocation.
Don't teachers have sad fantasies?
