Today, 2 August, is the feast of ...
* Stephen I, pope (257) - dealt with controversy regarding baptism
administered by heretics
* Theodota, martyr (304?) - was burned along with her three sons
* Thomas of Dover (or of Hales) (1295) - a monk, murdered by French
raiders who could not get him to disclose where the monastery's riches
had been hidden; king Richard II asked pope Urban VI to canonize
Thomas, but a process begun in 1382 was never carried out
