Information for applicants
Applications are invited for the Elsevier/LIRG Research Award. The purpose
of the Award is to encourage research and innovation in library and
information science. Particular attention will be paid to proposals
intended to improve accessibility, retrievability and usefulness of
information. The maximum value of the Award is £1,000 (one thousand
pounds).
Previous winners of the Award have included:
*John Brockman (Ministry of Defence) for his work on quality assurance in
library and information services
* A team from Loughborough and Leicester Universities for their work on
developing a hypermedia museum information system
*Jo Drew of Manchester Metropolitan University to fund travel to China to
investigate business information in trade and business relationships
between China and the UK
* Elisabeth Davenport of Indiana University and Queen Margaret College,
Edinburgh for work on costing and charging for academic networked services
in the UK
* David Allen of Sheffield University to investigate information
strategies, teaching/learning strategies and the transformation of the HE
sector
* Mark Gillham and Kathy Buckner of Queen Margaret College for a study of
access strategies of home users of interactive multimedia CD ROM
information systems
* Susan Copeland of Robert Gordon University to undertake a study of
electronic thesis
*Jonathan Willson of Manchester Metropolitan University for a study of
privacy and confidentiality of Internet use in public libraries
It is a condition of the Award that the winner shall present an interim
account of the research to the Annual General Meeting of the Library and
Information Research Group (or to an appropriate meeting agreed with LIRG).
In addition, a final report on the research will be required in the form
of a paper suitable for publication in Library and Information Research
News (or, by agreement, in some other form).
The Award may be used to defray research expenses (eg travel, postage
costs), to fund attendance at high level meetings or to fund a study tour.
However, a clear overall aim of the research must be stated: visits for
general professional development will not be considered.
There is no application form, and proposals may be made in any suitable
form. As guidance, it is suggested that the following should be included:
a) A description of the proposed research, including a title, the
objective(s), the methodology, the expected timescale, and any other
related work (by the proposer or others)
b) A financial projection, including all anticipated expenditure, which
will be used as the basis on which any award is assessed. Where it is
proposed to use funding from other sources to supplement the Award, this
should be clearly stated. Proposers should note that the Elsevier/LIRG
Award should be the principal source of funding for the research.
c) Curriculum vitae of the proposer
Proposals should reach the LIRG Awards and Prizes Officer, Noeleen Cookman
at the address below, by 31st October 1999. Informal discussions of
proposals are welcomed.
