We are looking for an Designer (Interaction, Industrial,
Engineering, CS), to join our team, which currently consists of
engineering designers, architects and computer scientists. We teach
a highly innovative studio based degree program in Design of
Information Environments and have associated design research
programs. If you are interested in designing how we interact with
cyberspace and in merging cyberspace and the physical world, you
will find us an excellent and supportive community to work within.
See our web page (address below) for more details.
Margot Brereton
LECTURER (LEVEL B) / SENIOR LECTURER (LEVEL C)
INFORMATION ENVIRONMENTS PROGRAM - DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
Reference No: 43499 Closing date: 20 August 1999
Information Environments are the networked systems that groups use
to work together at a distance. They ensure that everyone in an
organisation has access to the information they need and allows
distributed groups scattered around a company to work together
effectively. They are increasingly the core around which an
organisation operates.
In 1999 the University of Queensland initiated a new,
design-oriented Bachelor of Information Environments degree program.
The focus of this degree is on the design, development, deployment,
use and evolution of information environments. The degree adopts a
studio-oriented approach to teaching, with a balanced design and
information technology oriented course structure.
The new degree is offered at the University's new campus in Ipswich
by the Information Environments Program, a joint effort of
Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and
Architecture within the School of Information Technology. The
Ipswich campus itself is a testbed for the development of
information environment technologies, which will be used in the
delivery of the new course.
Applicants are expected to have a PhD or equivalent degree in an
area relating to Information Environments (for example Information
Technology, Architecture, Industrial Design or other design-related
discipline), although equivalent experience will also be considered.
While staff are expected primarily to focus on the development and
delivery of the new degree program, they will also be expected to
develop or participate in an existing research program related to
Information Environments. Many avenues for such participation exist
at the University, particularly through the CRC for Distributed
Systems Technology (DSTC). Current existing relevant research
programs include Collaborative Work, Design Tools, Workflow,
Resource Discovery, Distributed Databases, Security, Middleware,
Quality of Service, Computer Related Design, Multimedia
Applications, Design Studies and Interaction Design.
Several positions are available on a full-time continuing basis at
both Lecturer (Level B) and Senior Lecturer (Level C) levels. Level
of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Salary ranges are $48,327 - $57,388 per annum (Level B);
$59,201 - $68,262 per annum (Level C) plus 17% employer
superannuation contribution. Appointments will be subject to
satisfactory completion of the probationary period.
