I've been enjoying the exchanges on design theory, especially the
references for further reading. Since I've made an attempt over the past
several years to provide some tentative theoretical answers to many of the
questions being raised, I want to draw your attention to two pieces of
writing for further feedback. They're offered in the spirit of designing:
one needs to make something in order get further along with what needs
making.
The first is Designing in an Environmental Field: Essays, Metaphors,
Kasinas, published in 1998 by Aurora Books and available through
Amazon.com. There is a page describing what the book is about on my
webpage at darkwing.uoregon.edu/~diethelm and Amazon.com has the T.O.C. and
list of illustrations and diagrams.
A more scholarly follow up essay, "The Quality Project: Intimate,
Metaphoric and Catechresic Qualities in Design," (July 1999) is published
in pdf format and downloadable from my webpage. It's about 20 pages in
length.
The central concept of these projects is "environmental valuing" and an
attempt to build a postmodern and post-structuralist set of concepts for
design. I hope they'll end up being useful to the larger steps I think
will be needed in this direction.
