Contrary to the opinions that have been expressed so far, I think that
the TI buyout of Soft Warehouse will be beneficial.
Soft Warehouse has done a good job developing and supporting DERIVE. I
don't think anyone would argue this. However, as most of us who use
DERIVE know, it is unfortunately a program which seems to have missed
much of the mainstream market. I know the three universities that I
have attended have either used MAPLE or Mathematica, and DERIVE was only
mentioned as an 'other'. This situation is perhaps best shown by an
earlier thread this summer where people were concerened about the lack
of DERIVE books in the local bookstore.
I think TI has the ability to change this. Whether or not you like TI
or use their products, I don't think anyone would argue their influence
in the realm of math education. This influence (and their money!) can
take DERIVE to places that perhaps a smaller company like Soft Warehouse
couldn't. I think now you will see DERIVE in more universities and high
schools, which of course will help with the development of the program.
Anyway, that's my two cents!
