The second seminar of the ESRC-funded 'Wilderness Britain: social and
environmental perspectives on recreation and conservation' series will be
held on September 16th at the School of Geography, University of Leeds.
The seminar, entitled "Social and cultural histories of wild Britain,"
aims to continue the discussion generated at the last seminar and more
specifically to:
* provide a forum for the discussion of social, cultural and historical
perspectives on wild Britain;
* critically examine the philosophical roots of the idea of wilderness and
investigate these in the domestic context; and to
* examine the role of gender, education and other social variables in
wilderness perception.
Details of the seminar programme and the series newsletter, which includes
a report on the first session, can be found on the WWW at:
http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/staff/s.carver/wildbrit_web/wildbrit.html
We are currently finalising numbers for the session on September 16th, so
I would be grateful if you could please reply to me ASAP, ideally by
e-mail, to let me know whether you are interested in attending, either as
a participant or speaker. We can offer usually up to £30 for travel
expenses, although there is a small charge for lunch.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Matt Stroh, series co-convenor, with Steve Carver and Steffen Fritz
