Inscriptions of Identities in the Discourse of Arab Women
One-Day Conference, University of Kent at Canterbury 20th November 1999
Keynote Speakers:
Nawal-el Saadawi
Ahdaf Soueif
Hanan Al-Shaykh (to be confirmed)
Fedwa Malti-Douglas (to be confirmed)
The 20th century has witnessed the unprecedented rise of numerous amounts
of Arab women writers, film makers, artists and theorists. This conference
seeks to address issues around how Arab female identity has been inscribed
through these adverse available discourses.
Possible areas of inquiry:
Use/abuse of language; The problems of writing in a language other than
the mother tongue, especially for women/ problems of translation;
Reconstruction of Arab female identity following catastrophic events;
Identifying the audience: Who is the Arab woman producing for? Critique of
the present postcolonial theory used; Visual arts and their reception; How
is the Arab woman represented to the world by her sisters?
Other relevant areas of inquires are welcome
