CONTEXT
All forms of human expression involve physical action of the body.
Although we can make sense of the virtual, we are grounded in the
physical. We physically interact with other people, our pets, and
objects in our environment. Physical interaction, the dance and rhythm
of life, is central to our existence. The nature and quality of this
dance effects our wellbeing and helps shape our understanding and
concept of the world. It helps to define who we are and our relationship
to the rest of the world.
Humans possess a wide range of natural abilities and skills from
everyday life that are fundamentally motor-sensory in nature. Only a few
of these skills and abilities have either been adequately modelled or
harnessed in terms of human-computer interaction.
The nature of our environment heavily influences how we interact with
it. A rich and stimulating physical environment affords rich stimulating
interaction. As we move away from the desktop metaphor, the physical
constraints that normally apply to interaction with computers are
removed. This relates both to the embodiment of the technology and our
physical actions. Putting computer technology "out there" beyond the
desktop presents both new challenges and opportunities. There is a need
to develop a vision and understanding that enable us to combine the real
and the virtual into a coherent whole.
What are the best ways to make use of the real to support the virtual
and visa versa? Clearly, by building the virtual into the real, the real
is enhanced, but conversely, by drawing upon the physical, there is the
opportunity to make the virtual more tangible, intuitive and lower the
overall cognitive load associated with each task.
With the prospect of advanced technology embedded into everyday objects
and the environment, new ways of thinking are needed which provide fresh
perspectives on the very concept and nature of human-computer
interaction. This workshop provides a focus for such discussion by
providing a forum for researchers, practitioners, theorists, and other
visionary thinkers to discuss the philosophical, scientific, technical,
design and humanistic aspects of physicality and tangibility as they
relate to interaction with computers of the present and the future.
INVITATION TO SUBMIT
The workshop invites submissions of original, high quality papers,
videos, and demonstrations discussing completed or on-going work and
evaluation that addresses issues relevant to Physicality and Tangibility
in Interaction. As the list suggests below, it is envisaged that
physicality and tangibility are relevant to work in many domains.
However, papers need to clearly address issues of physicality and
tangibility as their focus. Contributions should aim at promoting
discussion, identifying salient issues, problems, and can describe
implementation, embodiment and evaluation.
Example domains for submission include (but are not limited to):
* Physical computing
* Tangible computing
* Ubiquitous computing
* Augmented reality
* Ecological approaches
* Cognition, physicality and action
* Performance and technology
* Virtual Theatre
* Interactive Movies
* Computers and music
* Creative expression and computing
* Personal, mobile, wearable technology
* Gestural and multimodal interaction
* Usability Engineering
* Novel interface design, input output devices
* Physical interaction at a distance
* Interaction with synthetic characters
* Scenario based interaction
* Human-robot interaction
* Wellbeing and computing
* Accessibility, "design for all"
* Disability applications
SUBMISSION FORMAT
All submissions must be in English. Text should be in postscript or PDF
format to print on A4 size paper. MS Word format is acceptable but not
preferred.
Short Papers: are due on September 8th, 1999, and should be typically
3-4 pages not exceeding 5 pages of A4 (10 point font) inclusive of
figures, tables, and bibliography and should not be numbered. Paper
submissions should include a full paper manuscript and a separate cover
page with the paper title, author name(s), affiliation(s) and full
contact details including URL, abstract, and a list of keywords.
Demonstrations: are due on September 8th, 1999. Submissions should
include an extended abstract with references, URLs etc. (max. 3 pages)
of the work being demonstrated, a step-by-step description of demo
operation and key pointers to contribution and technical content.
Video Submissions: are also due on September 8th, 1999. Submissions
should include an extended abstract (max. 3 pages) of the work being
presented and its technical content, and should not be longer than 10-15
minutes.
Video and demo submissions must indicate to the workshop committee any
special requirements and equipment needed for their presentation.
PUBLICATION
The submissions will be reviewed by at least two members of the workshop
committee. Papers will be posted on the workshop website to allow
attendees to read materials and promote discussions prior to the
workshop. Printed proceedings will be distributed during the workshop.
Efforts are being made towards the possibility of publishing a
post-workshop journal special issue and/or book containing extended
versions of the accepted papers.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Authors and participants are requested to register, via e-mail, their
interest in participating in the workshop. Authors are requested to
include the submission title, author name(s) and affiliation(s), contact
information, and abstract by August 31st, 1999. Paper submissions should
be sent electronically as postscript, PDF or Word email attachments. All
submissions must reach the workshop committee no later than September
8th, 1999. Notification of acceptance will be sent by email on or before
September 23rd. There will be the opportunity to revise submissions to
produce a camera-ready version by October 6th. Papers and Demo abstracts
will be posted on the workshop web site to encourage interaction among
participants both before and during the workshop. A mailing list will be
set up which participants are encouraged to use for comment and
discussion initiation before and after the workshop. To participate in
the workshop it will be necessary to register for the i3 Annual
Conference. Please complete the downloadable registration form and hotel
registration form (fax/snail mail these to the addresses on the forms)
as close as possible to September 24th deadline to ensure availability
of accommodation.
