Derek McMinn combined the Wagner resurfacing with the Ring
metal-on-metal bearing to produce his first metal on metal
resurfacing in Birmingham about 7 or 8 years ago (ish). After a few
failures, he got the design right and put in many for several years.
It was made by Corin in Cirencester and was called (imaginatively)
the McMinn Hip. He then fell out with the company and set up his
own business making the hip, meanwhile Corin made some minor
modifications and continued marketing their hip. McMinn himself
has sold it hard to the public (Tomorrow's World, Sunday Times,
recent BBC) as well as presenting his results at Orthopaedic
meetings, but he has only a couple of years follow up of his current
design.
I think last weeks TV programme was a little dishonest. A fit,
motivated squash or judo expert will do well initially after any THR.
There was a well known major league baseball star who returned to
competitive baseball after a conventional THR. The question is how
well the hip will be functioning in 20 or more years. Come back in
20 years and I'll tell you! The early metal on metal joints had a very
high early failure rate, but the ones that did'nt fail early tended to do
very well at 20 years +, though not many of those original patients
were still alive by then.
At 40, he is rather young, but I regularly have people referred to me
at that sort of age. My youngest patient was a girl aged 21 and I
also have a 26 year old male. Both OK so far. If your friend want
to know more, I'd be happy for him to contact me directly.
