RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN DESIGN OPTIMISATION
Flexible Optimisation within the CAD/CAM Environment
Duration: 2 years, starting 1 October 1999 (earliest)
Starting Salary (approx): £16,000 to £19,000 per annum
Collaborators: Nissan European Technology Centre Ltd (NETC), and SDRC

Background:
Increasing global competition is forcing manufacturing industries to
produce designs with better functionality at low cost. It is
observable that real life CAD/CAM environments do not support
flexible design optimisation methods. The research will help to
ensure ‘right first time design’ thus reducing cost and design lead
time.
Aims of the research:
* To develop a framework for ‘Flexible Optimisation in a CAD/CAM
Environment’ so enabling CAD/CAM operators to select appropriate
techniques and parameters.
* To ensure framework can handle different methods of optimisation,
e.g. multi-objective, multi-modal and constrained, within a CAD/CAM
system.
* Validate framework in a prototype decision support system, using a
standard CAD/CAM system.
The Role:
* The multidisciplinary research will involve the study of the ‘state
of the art design’ optimisation approaches and best practices in
industry, evolutionary computing, and neutral Application
Programming Interface development.
* A large part of the project will involve interacting directly with
designers in the companies.
The Person:
* Should have research experience in Design/Mechanical/Manufacturing
Engineering.
* Have software application/programming knowledge. e.g. C++
* Have some experience of project co-ordination and capability in
project management
* Knowledge of evolutionary computing and CAD/CAM will be
preferred
