Taiwan has quite a record of using aid and investment in order to try and
influence countries to support them in various international arenas.
International recognition of Taiwan has always been a rather delicate
issue, particularly for those countries wanting to have easier relations
with mainland China. Consequently as they became a relatively wealthy
nation Taiwan has sought to win such recognition through financial
generosity.
Recently the Papua New Guinea government of Bill Skate fell due, in part,
to the political ramifications of PNG accepting Taiwanese aid.
