***** LEISURE AND EXCLUSION *****
******* SEPTEMBER 2 1999 ********
STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY, STOKE-ON-TRENT, U.K.
Much political attention on the issue of "exclusion" has so
far been re-writing the poverty and deprivation debates
whilst acknowledging that exclusion is a broader issue
about the "breakdown" of social, economic and cultural
structures that allow citizenship or at least social and
societal participation. Political responses thus far have,
thus, been in terms of improving access to work and
thence to participation.
As exclusion is a politically relevant issue at national
and international level, we invite people to contribute to
a ONE DAY, inter-disciplinary conference "LEISURE AND
EXCLUSION" which we hope will explore the spaces and
moments of social and cultural exclusion in respect to
leisure. In selecting "leisure" as a central issue, we aim
to recognise that it is in this realm as much as, if not
more than, the sphere of "work", where contemporary
identities are constructed, negotiated and maintained.
We intend this conference to provide an opportunity to
broaden the social exclusion debate to consider the
production, consumption and different geographies of
leisure and recreation.
Papers will include issues regarding:
Methodological concerns regarding geography and the study
of leisure
Changing countryside leisure
Urban leisure and the behaviour of young people
Children's leisure spaces
Ethnicity and rural leisure
Further details and booking forms are available from Dr.
