The Land Use Section at Merlewood is urgently looking for a casual SO,
(from now until March 2000). If you know of anyone who would be
interested, please can you let Morna Gillespie or myself know (address
below).
We ideally need someone with GIS experience and/or good excel/access
skills. Full details of the post are:
Scientific Officer (Temporary)
Spatial Data Editing and Analysis
The Land Use Section at ITE Merlewood is concerned with monitoring
and interpreting changes in land use and cover, especially with
respect to biodiversity. Current projects concentrate on the British
landscape, and include the ecological evaluation of land under
Countryside Stewardship, the landscape and ecological effects of
lowland game shooting on biodiversity, the evaluation of methods of
biodiversity monitoring based on habitat structure, and projects
analysing spatial patterns of pollutants with respect to land use and
biodiversity.
The largest current project is Countryside Survey 2000 (CS2000). This
is a survey of land cover and vegetation in a sample of over 500 1 km
squares, most of which had been surveyed previously (in 1978, 1984 ad
1990). The field survey for CS2000 was completed in 1998; data entry
and analysis are under way for reporting next year.
The Spatial Analysis Group (SAG) is concerned with reporting spatial
stock and change for CS2000. The group is looking for a temporary
member of staff, to start as soon as possible, who will help with data
validation and analysis. The work entails checking and validating
field-survey data from Countryside Survey 2000 (CS2000) that has been
entered onto a Geographical Information System (GIS). The GIS used is
Arc/Info and experience of this system would be preferable but not
essential, as training will be given. Once the data has been
validated in the GIS, further work will involve processing the spatial
data and combining it with attribute data held in an Oracle database.
Candidates should have general experience of working with computers,
preferably Unix operating systems and Oracle or Access databases. An
interest in botanical, environmental or geographical sciences would
also be helpful.
The post is until 31st March 2000, starting as soon as possible, and
working at the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Merlewood Research
Station, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria.

Terrestrial Ecology, Windermere Road, Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, LA11
