Associate Professor (m/f)
Social-Theoretic Aspects of Policy Oriented Research
Job Description: The Associate Professor is responsible for the development
of the general theoretic-conceptual framework for the analysis of
(individual) spatial and environmental action and for the analysis of
(aggregate) societal developments. This framework is to serve as a general
social-theoretic basis for research in the fields of: 'spatial interaction
processes' (mobility, transport and communication), 'sustainable
development', 'urban and rural transformation processes' and 'spatial
integration and differentiation processes' (globalisation, regionalisation,
glocalisation, identification and alienation). It provides the basis for
theory-led empirical research in these fields. In each of these thematic
fields the analysis of social-cultural and economic developments and the
related action and decision processes are of central interest. The
explanation of these trends helps in the search for possibilities of
influencing them by concrete policy measures. An important task therefore
will be the development of a methodology for translating the
theoretic-conceptual framework into concrete designs for policy oriented
research and policy making. The associate professor will contribute both to
the research and teaching in human geography and spatial planning. The
associate professor will also play an active role in linking the spatial
and environmental sciences to the other policy sciences and to the social
sciences.
The teaching and research tasks of the associate professor will demand
broad knowledge:
* of currently pressing societal problems and of relevant theory in these
fields, as well as of the historic and current trends in production,
consumption, mobility and management of the environment;
* of behaviour of citizens, companies and institutions and their
relationship with the environment;
* of possibilities for policy interventions in these fields;
* in at least one of the fields of research and teaching mentioned above.
Teaching tasks:
* provide academic leadership to faculty and staff;
* facilitate and promote excellence and innovation in teaching and research;
* co-ordinate teaching activities and contribute to the curricula within
the School for Spatial and Environmental Sciences, especially to the
curricula for Human Geography and Spatial Planning;
* partly be responsible for final stage of curriculum (internship and
masters thesis).
Research tasks:
* management and further development of research within the framework of
the research programme of the Faculty of Policy Sciences on Innovative
Spatial- and Environmental Policy;
* develop, acquire funding, manage, execute and supervise relevant research
projects both financed by academic research funds as well as contract
research;
* publish research results in (inter-)national academic journals and in
other media.
What we expect:
* Ph.D. in Human Geography, Spatial Planning, Environmental Studies or
other closely related social scientific field;
* thorough knowledge of multi-disciplinary social-theoretic background of
debates in the field of spatial and environmental sciences;
* proven capability in translating this knowledge into practical
problem-oriented research designs;
* knowledgeable of main policy debates in spatial and environmental policy;
* excellence in teaching and experience in programme and curriculum
development;
* broad experience with programming, acquisition of research funds,
managing, execution and supervising research activities;
* contribution to enhancing the external profile, as shown in substantial
contributions in teaching, research, editorial and management-work, and
consultancy
* willingness to learn Dutch.
