Dear Liz
Thank you so much for your two very thought-provoking pieces on 'They'
My interpretation of the poem is that the children are drawn back to the
world of family love in which they belong, and I assume that in the 'They'
the children are happy to be there. I am not sure that there is another
place where they belong ? On the other hand in Merrow Down Taffy is flitting
away from her father.
But I am going back to reread the story and have a further think myself. How
right you are about the capacity of his writings to reveal new sides of
themselves. I think RK himself, somewhere in 'Something of Myself' talks of
writing tales at different levels of meaning.
