The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History
(University of Birmingham) is offering a new
course on Landscape Archaeology and Geomatics
(full and part-time MA and Postgraduate Diploma).
The Landscape Archaeology and Geomatics course
trains graduates in archaeology, and related
disciplines, to use digital landscape data through
a taught course introducing a broad range of
archaeological computing skills. It provides the
student with an academic background to undertake
further specialist research or to be employed
within an archaeological unit or other
environmental or curatorial organisation.
Course Content
The course is highly vocational and emphasises
hands-on teaching, and provides a significant
taught element including;
Introduction to Landscape Archaeology
Basic quantitative techniques and programming for
archaeologists.Data Collection techniques_
Total station survey and global positioning
systems
Databases and Spreadsheets
CAD/CAM in field archaeology, Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) in landscape analysis
Presentation skills, desktop publishing and the
World Wide Web
Research methods and practical skills
Assessment for the course is based on a portfolio
of coursework, in the case of the postgraduate
diploma, or a portfolio and dissertation for the
MA. The course replicates the process of
professional project reporting or, in the case of
the dissertation, more substantial research
programmes
Taught in association with the University of
Birmingham Field Archaeology Unit, Staff of the
Department of Ancient History and Archaeology
provide academic support for studies which may be
based anywhere in the world. The University of
Birmingham offers dedicated laboratory space and
equipment for this course.
