Thomas,
None of this addresses the fact that due to a small pressure group who saw their incomes threatened by the publication of an evidence-based guideline we have lost an important source of state-of-the-science&art guidelines. The agency's mission has already been radically diverted; the security of other missions is irrelevant to that matter.
Not all surgeons (or physicians) are callous guild members. But a sufficient number clearly are.

In regard to the emails over the last couple days about the AHCPR,
please see the
page attached to this email. From the AAMC website . . . The budget for
the Agency is being increased from $171 to $250 million as is noted in
the web update. Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding about the
future security or mission of the Agency. BTW, Senator Frist who wrote
the version of the bill in the Senate is a surgeon . . . I think it's a
little unfair to cast all surgeons in a negative light regarding either
their feelings toward the AHCPR or guidelines as a whole.
Hope this is helpful.
