Position: Executive Director
The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC)
invites applications for the position of Executive
Director. The ideal candidate should have the ambition and ability to
work in a challenging, multinational organisation where
cross-disciplinary team work is essential, with dedication and
commitment to environmental issues, and a personal interest to
contribute to problem solving in a complex and rapidly changing
environment.
The Executive Director is responsible for the day to day operation of
the Center, reporting to the Board of Directors and
implementing its decisions, recommending strategic directions and
policies for the organisation. The individual will liaise with the
Center's 26 signatory countries, donors and constituent stakeholders of
the region to develop and implement the work program
of the Center. He/she organizes and supervises the work of the Center,
and represents the Center within his/her mandate.
Qualifications and Experience:
Adequate education in a field related to the work of the REC;
Extensive experience in the environmental sector in Central and
Eastern Europe at the national and international level;
Thorough knowledge of environmental issues and their impacts for
environmental NGOs, government institutions and the
business sector;
Proven management and interpersonal skills;
Fluency in English and at least one other language of the CEE
region;
Excellent written and spoken communication skills, computer
literacy;
Demonstrated diplomatic and negotiating skills, understanding of
the international processes related to environment,
experience in project development and fundraising, as well as
experience in multicultural working environments, would be
valuable assets.
The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC)
is a non-partisan, non-advocacy, not-for-profit
organisation with a mission to assist in solving environmental problems
in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Center fulfills
this mission by encouraging cooperation among non-governmental
organisations, governments, businesses and other
environmental stakeholders, by supporting the free exchange of
information and by promoting public participation in
environmental decision making. The REC has its headquarters near
Budapest, in Szentendre, Hungary, with Country Offices in
15 CEE countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia,
Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,
FYR Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia.
The selected candidate will be expected to reside in Hungary for the
duration of the contract and travel extensively. Duration of
the contract is 2 years with possibility of renewal. Expected starting
date is June 1, 2000.
