Hello, regarding the debate around employing only disabled people in certain
jobs - I wholeheartedly agree with it.
Disability Equality Training by definition should be done only by trainers
who are disabled people.
In addition, there are too many times when non-disabled people have jobs in
which they have control over, or influence, disabled people's lives. This
needs to be redressed.
Finally, if I were accessing services for women, I would be appaulled if I
were faced with a man. Similaly, accessing services for disabled people -
particularly in Centres for Independent / Integrated Living, I would prefer
to deal with another disabled person - preferably a disabled person with
sound, social-model based politics. Unfortunately, most of these
organisations in the UK employ some non-disabled people.
I do not feel that it is segregative as some people think. For me it is
common sense to have disabled people working with disabled people, it gives
extra support and confidence to me accessing services when they are run by
disabled people.
I'm afraid this isn't a very coherent, deeply-argued message - I don't have
much time and I won't have any time til next week, but I wanted to
contribute.
Welcome further comments ...
Linda Marsh.
