Hi,
I think this debate and article is important. The idea that children that
don't have a 'recognised' 'disability' are 'normal' is problematic. Having
had a transplant myself this notion of 'normality' applied to other children
not recognised within the 'normal' discourse on disability can cause all
sorts of problems. Whether before a transplant or afterwards there are
always differences and you still have to negotiate a world that expects
people not to be taken medication for the rest of their life, side efects
etc. The pressure can be enormous to pretend otherwise. We live in a society
that has changed in terms of life expectancy and health so the differences
are often felt even more. Like I've said before negoiating a modern
environment is more than physical. It is also a psychological one that is
tied to all sorts of political, cultural and economic imperitives that are
hidden in everyday spaces.
Glenn.
