Greig Fratus
Information Officer
CTI Mathematics
---------------------------
The Deputy Director attended meetings of the Mathwise Executive
Committee and the Midlands Mathematics Group, and continued
planning with Information Services at Birmingham on the
establishment of MathGate, the resource discovery network project
for mathematics.
Two workshops were organised, the first at the University of Bristol
on behalf of the Mathwise User Group (MWUG), and the second in
collaboration with the CTI Centres for Statistics, Physics and
Engineering on the topic of MATHML: Putting Mathematical
Notation on the Web.
The MWUG workshop on 23 June, organised and attended by
Greig, featured morning presentations from Jon Sims Williams of
Bristol, Mike McCabe of Portsmouth and Martin Greenhow of
Brunel, and a hands-on session in the afternoon that was
concerned with familiarising delegates with the assessment
facilities available on the Pre-Calculus Cluster version of Mathwise
that is currently available from NAG. The day was attended by 15
people from 10 different institutions. It was followed by a brief
MWUG committee meeting which Pam joined via videolink from
Birmingham.
The MathML workshop, attended by Pam, was held at Queen Mary
and Westfield College on 25 June. The day was a very successful
one with 40 participants (and several more on the waiting list!) and
featured presentations from Professor Roy Pike of Surrey
University on the history of MathML, Stephen Buswell of Stilo
Technologies on OpenMath, Dr James Currall of University of
Glasgow on EzMath, and an introduction to TechExplorer by Dr
Francis Wright of QMW. It was agreed that the workshop should
be repeated in July, to take account of demand.
