Undergraduate Mathematics Teaching Conference 1999
6 September to 9 September 1999
The briefs this year are:
Teaching Mathematical Concepts using Puzzles and Games
How best to prepare mathematics students for work
Student Projects in Pure Mathematics
Increasing Student Involvement In Their Own Learning
Plenary sessions
There will be two 90 minute plenary sessions. This year the two speakers
are Dr Paul Clark, Chief Executive of the Institute for Learning and
Teaching and Dr. David Singmaster of the South Bank University.
Presentations and posters
Delegates are invited to contribute to the presentation session on the
Wednesday morning where issues relevant to all aspects of undergraduate
mathematics may be aired. Outline descriptions of proposals by delegates
(restricted to no more than one side of A4 paper) should be made directly
to Dr David Emery, School of Computing, P.O. Box 334, Staffordshire
University, Stafford, ST18 0DG. Proposals may also be sent by e-mail
([log in to unmask]) by the same date. Abstracts of presentations
will be published in the Proceedings. The acceptance of a proposal will be
communicated by July 10 1999.
Delegates are also welcome to bring posters with them; space will be made
available for their display provided the Organising Committee is notified
beforehand that space is required. Delegates requiring poster space should
let David Emery know, at the above address (or by e-mail), by July 10
1999.
Conference Outing and Dinner
Details of the Conference Outing and Dinner have yet to be finalised.
Further details on the conference outing will appear on the UMTC web site.
All delegates will return to Sheffield Hallam University in the evening
for the conference dinner.
How much does it cost?
With the Teaching Quality Assessment of mathematics in England imminent,
departments will be keen that staff should participate in this type of
conference. Talk to your Head of Department about funding. The cost this
year is still modest at an all-in fee of just £250. If you are
non-resident, the fee is £195 but still includes lunch and dinner from
Monday to Wednesday. An optional packed lunch can be provided on the
Thursday of departure at a cost of £6 (non-refundable). Two copies of the
Conference Proceedings are included in the fee.
