Dear Paul (and all - because he copied his comments to everybody)
Thanks for your comments on my earlier email about MY2000 themes. These were
not my suggestions (!), but were merely proposed to set the ball rolling.
My personal feeling is that the "relevance" of maths, and its "unreasonable
effectiveness", is just ONE of the things we should be shouting from the
house-tops about our subject. Others include aesthetics, enthusiasms, and
the other things that Paul mentioned.
I hear you as not being against the IDEA of themes, Paul - simply that you
would prefer other items on the list. (In addition, we need to make the
titles less bland and more "zappy".)
Given that, I think the themes should stress the DIVERSITY of our subject.
That is the challenge I sought to propose in my earlier email. I'd certainly
welcome suggestions about appropriate themes and how to present them.
Thanks to all, esp. to Paul

PS: WATCH THIS SPACE!!! "Maths on the Tube" has not been forgotten. Nor has
PubMat(h)s, Table-mat(s) and a whole lot of innovate ideas. We need MORE
ideas about how to promote maths in the year 2000 and beyond - if you have
an ideas you want to develop, please send me an email with a one-para
descriptor. Thanks.
