Whilst crit geog has been discussing the media's neglect of the
Angolan war in contrast to Kosovo, one aspect of that war
has been missed. It is one of the few wars NOT to have a religious
dimension to it. Elsewhere in the world we have.....(no particular
order)
Kosovo; Muslims VS Orthodox Christians
Israel/Palestine, Jews VS Muslims
India, Pakistan, Hindus VS Muslims
N Ireland, Catholics VS Protestants
Sudan, Christains VS Muslims
Algeria, Muslims VS State
Iran/Iraq, Shiite Muslims VS Sunni Muslims
Armenia, Azerbijan, Christains VS Muslims
Solving the above would still leave us with conflicts in Sri Lanka,
Ethiopia/Eritrea, Zaire, and a few other places, but these religious
backed conflicts tend to be fought with a fervour that makes
resolution very hard indeed. Perhaps the UN or some other world body
should be looking at how to disengage religion from the wider scene
of world politics etc.
