ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHERS ANNUAL MEETING
PITTSBURGH 4-8th APRIL 2000
SESSIONS ON 'LANDSCAPES OF DEFENCE'
John Gold and George Revill (both of Oxford Brookes University)
are organising sessions on 'Landscapes of Defence'. More
information follows as to themes and contact information.
LANDSCAPES OF DEFENCE
Many areas of towns, cities and the countryside now exhibit
`landscapes of defence' - landscapes shaped or otherwise
affected by formal or informal defensive strategies
to achieve recognisable social, political or cultural goals.
Such strategies may take material and architectural form, be
enshrined in legal and political measures, aggregated in social practices
condensed and displayed in cultural symbols and icons.
These sessions, which renew an initiative begun at a symposium
at Oxford Brookes University in May 1998, invite you to join a
small group of Anglo-American contributors:
* to consider issues arising from the production, implementation
and use of landscapes of defence in all their various forms, including:
gated communities.
the privatisation of public space.
the symbolism of military landscapes.
* to address critically shared issues of theoretical and applied
concern, including:
risk society and globalisation.
technology and social control.
law and the politics of public access.
territoriality and architectural determinism.
the defensive implications of the `new world order'.
* to examine the ethical and political implications of defensive strategies.
* to throw light on issues involving practical policy.
If you are interested in presenting a paper, please contact
George Revill as soon as possible, preferably with a title and
short abstract (maximum 250 words).
Please feel free to forward this message.
