RESPONSE TO ANDREW BAIRDS RECENT COMMENTS.
ACROTLEM DEFINITIONS.
As an ecologist (IE NOT A PEATLAND HYDROLOGIST) the definition I use
in lectures is the Seasonally-aerated one (without the rider about
amount of decomposition). But I only apply it to bogs, pointing out
that it was first applied to raised mires but that it is probably also
useful in thinking about blanket bog. I would not apply it to fens.
Since 2 of my interests are paleoecology and microbial ecology this
seems a useful definition to me, as I am interested in where aerobic
microbes can operate. I welcome any comments on what I should tell my
students next time I talk about acrotlems!
Research focus.
I agree with Andy on this but dont have any good ideas about what to
do!
best wishes
