While Rowley's recent post was a bit over the top (if not racist) I think
what he was actually saying was that the dearth of SHOs that many A&E
departments experienced in recent years seem to be coming to an end ?
We recently had one appointee pull out for an August start and have been
overwhelmed by the number of applicants for our readvertisement.
Furthermore the calibre of applicants has been extremely high and this from
a group of doctors who don't know where they are going to be working in one
month's time.
There is also little doubt that we are seeing a great number of
inappropriate applications and it is sad to see these people are able to
offer referees when clearly their interests would be better served if their
mentors advised their mentees to direct themselves and their time elsewhere.
Has the time come for a central clearing house ? A matching system for SHOs
? or should we save trees by asking doctors to post their CVs on their
personal websites as an alternative to submitting endless numbers of CVs to
various institutions for a variety of posts ? It would certainly make
shortlisting less onerous.
