In the Australian scene the commonest drug used for fat loss is
Clenbuterol. There is a great deal of misunderstanding about its effect and
side effects but when used in a dose of one teaspoonful 3 times daily until
side effects such as tremor and shakiness occur, the results seem good. The
material is only available here as a veterinary preparation and it is
difficult to titrate a dose and evaluate its effects as it comes in bulk.
To date I have seen no significant problem from it but cases have been
reported in the medical literature and you should chase these up.
Ephedrine is described in the gym literature but again, no research is
available. Most pharmacology books state that it reduces fat levels but
they are results on non-trained individuals. Things may de different in the
athlate. It is no longer available in Australia, thank heavens!
Gym staff obtain their knowledge in many cases from the magazines and it is
at that level - totally unjustified.

Dear all, I am currently researching an article on drugs - both legal and
illegal ones - used in the gym. I suspect that a lot of the legal stuff,
such as Thermogen and 'fat-burning' formulas are pretty ineffective, but
can they be harmful?
What are the most commonly used drugs for fat burning and muscle building
and do any of them work?
I'd also like to know what the current legal situation is on ephedrine - I
believe it has been banned in the UK...
Any opinions on this area would be interesting to hear. For example, is the
problem that the gym staff who 'peddle' these formulas just don't know
enough about them, or is it more sinister than that?
Thanks!
Sam Murphy
